Hello art community! I have Been gone and out of touch for at least two years. I’ve had some physical challenges due to arthritis and to be honest, it was bringing me down and I was getting depressed and had completely quit doing any style of art. I have drawn and painted since I was very young and this was something that was a part of me for many, many years (we won’t say how many!). I allowed this to slip away even more, when the arthritis in my right hand, my drawing hand, became severe enough, that I was having difficulty just using a fork to eat meals. That’s when I knew I was done and realized how much time I had wasted not painting when I was able. I was down, depressed and feeling like, well let’s just say it, sorry for myself. I was so sure I knew I couldn’t hold or control a pencil anymore that I gave up, in other harsh words, I was a quitter. Then something miraculous happened, my birthday. Not so miraculous I was born, but what resulted as matter of social convention, on birthdays, the ever coveted birthday present. This year, that present was a spectacular new iPad complete with, drum roll please…….a brand spanking shiny new iPad pencil. Well, at first, I thought how cool this would have been several years ago, when I could still hold one of these things, but then I read the message a friend wrote on the box, “Draw everything and anything every single day”. So, I charged up the new pad, downloaded sketch book and proceeded to try to figure out how it works….and get the answer I was afraid of and had been avoiding so long, could I control the darn thing to even draw a simple line. And so, I began trying for three days straight, and while I do have some difficulty with my grip, I discovered I’m not dead yet, and with some practice, maybe I can keep this part of me. They are all comic or cartoon style, but that was the easiest starting point for me and I enjoy it. The style in which paint and ink are applied with these tools, made control much easier for me over time. And the ease of making corrections is a Godsend. If you have never worked with digital media in your works, I highly suggest it, I used to think this was “cheating”, I was always old school and even had always used pen and ink in my watercolors, meaning bottled ink. Anyway, this is not a pity party, millions of people live with arthritis every day, I’m okay with living with it, but, from now on, I’ll live with it the way I want to, not how it wants me to, so, that’s that and the images posted are the result of three days of drawing “anything and everything every single day”.

From vine to wine

Well here it is, a painting completed entirely from wine. It was quite a challenge since this media is monochromatic, forsaking my watercolors, ink and colored pencils was difficult. I used a cabernet franc from a local winery, they were kind enough to allow me behind the scenes to take photos and the gracious host, the winery manager, printed photos she had already taken for me to use as reference. I used the wine directly from the bottle as a wash and reduced it once for a medium tone and twice for a richer darker tone. However, this second process in reducing does make the wine a little tacky due to the sugars. A matte spray should keep it in check. I did use some masking fluid to help create the grapes and accents on the leaves and stems, I hope I was somewhat successful and I am looking forward to doing another one. This is a long process however, as many layers of wine are needed to create the deep contrast and even some of the light areas have several layers. Thanks for looking and I appreciate you visiting.

STAG'S LEAP WINERY

I did this from a photo I took while touring Stag’s Leap property in California. The area is beautiful and buildings like this are scattered throughout the property with their vineyards gracing the front, for what feels like miles. Through the courtesy of my sister’s position with Beringer, we were able to take full advantage of tastings and sightseeing at many wineries all through Sonoma and the foothills. What a great day. This is watercolor and colored pencil, again, I tried to avoid using ink, but I miss it! My next piece will be an unexpected surprise, if I can do it that is, please check back!

sunflower

This fabulous photo was taken by a young photographer, after my posting of a sunflower I did in watercolor, she has definitely done this beautiful flower far more justice than I did and makes you think harder about us all, “loving mother earth”, thanks Deva and thanks for keeping nature real and beautiful for us.

HISTORIC FORT WAYNE

historicfwcards

I had this set of “Historic Fort Wayne” (set 1-includes: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, CLub Soda, The Sunbeam Bread Sign and Smith Airfield) notecards made from some of my artwork and was very happy with how they came out.  I am always looking for new ways to express and share my works.

INDIANA LANDSCAPES

indianalandcards

I titled this set, “Indiana Landscapes” (set 1–includes:  The Noble County Infirmary Barn, The Spenverville Covered Bridge, Haigg Schoolhouse and a Northern Indiana Landscape) and hope to do two more sets with different works of each of these categories soon.   I think the works  look better reduced onto cards!  I told the printer she actually made it look like I could paint.  These are fun to do and have to share with friends and family.   I hope my month long visit to Sacramento brings me some new and interesting subjects for new works to incorporate into other ventures with art.

This is an older piece, at the beginning of my ink and watercolor fetish, I still like it, but it could have been better

palmer

This is a barn in Albion, Indiana, I used ink and colored pencil, this was sketched plein air style and completed over 11-12 hours of pencil work
